Suicide Prevention Training in Wichita
Opportunities to increase your ability to respond to a suicidal crisis are plentiful in Wichita and Sedgwick County. Trainings are available in-person and online through local prevention partners and are provided at pre-scheduled events as well as by arrangement for businesses, community organizations and faith-based groups.
IN-PERSON TRAININGS
ASSIST TRAINING
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day face-to-face workshop featuring powerful audiovisuals, discussions, and simulations. At an ASIST workshop, participants learn how to prevent suicide by recognizing signs, providing a skilled intervention, and developing a safety plan to keep someone alive. Two knowledgeable, supportive trainers guide learners through the course, ensuring comfort and safety. Trainings are provided on a scheduled basis.

Designed specifically for community members to learn to help one another, QPR is an emergency response used to support people in crisis. QPR is the most widely used brief intervention training in the world, and prepares individuals to ask important questions, validate the person’s feelings, and work with them to get help. In-person and virtual group trainings are available.

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM): This training focuses on how friends, family, and providers can reduce a person’s access to those things frequently used in suicide such as firearms and medications. Participants learn who may benefit from means counseling, how to have conversations about lethal means with someone who is struggling, and how to help individuals and families make their homes suicide safer.

EmailMENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Trainings are provided on a scheduled basis.
Email CallYOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Trainings are provided on a scheduled basis.

Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM): Reducing access to lethal means, such as firearms and medication, can determine whether a person at risk for suicide lives or dies.This course is about how to reduce access to the methods people use to kill themselves. It covers who needs lethal means counseling and how to work with people at risk for suicide—and their families—to reduce access.
LIVINGWORKS START
LivingWorks Start teaches valuable suicide intervention skills to individuals over the age of 13 in an hour-long, online format. This model utilizes a four-step process to keep a person safe from suicide and requires no prior training to use. For more information visit the LivingWorks website.
